© Bruce Goodman 9 August 2014

It was 1942. Andrew was engaged to be married to Betty. Andrew was away at war.

Andrew was in Malta, in the air force. He had a sister called Connie. Connie got a letter from Andrew.

Connie, just to warn you. I’m going to send Betty a “Dear John” letter. She’s not the one for me. Take care.

The next day they received the news that Andrew had been killed in battle. Fiancée Betty was devastated.

Connie intercepted the “Dear John” letter and burnt it.

Betty never married. For fifty three years until her death, Betty never knew she’d been dumped.
