176. She Cradled Her Baby
© Bruce Goodman 4 April 2014

She cradled her baby in her arms. She knew it was dead. It was cold. It had died of cold. She herself was frozen like you wouldn’t believe. No fire, no warmth, no food, but simply a little shelter in the ice cave from the bitter wind. There was no hope.

She gathered what little strength she had. She lovingly placed her child’s body on the floor of the ice cave and lumbered outside into the arctic storm. Thrusting her fists in the air, she shouted: “Up yours, Homo sapiens sapiens fuckers!”

With that, she collapsed dead in the frozen snow, knowing she was the last Neanderthal on the planet.
