In the antipodes it is the shortest day: June 21. Many people celebrate their “Mid-Winter Christmas” with a dinner with friends and a few Christmas decorations. No presents of course. No Santa Claus. No snow. Just mud and a decent fire perhaps. Virginia was disappointed. She wrote to the paper: DEAR EDITOR: I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, ‘If you see it in THE SUN it’s so.’ Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus? Virginia The editor’s answer echoed down the corridors of modernity. It was destined to become a classic: YES VIRGINIA! Your little friends are right. Don’t they teach you science in school anymore? Santa is a load of garbage. |
