3091. Barnyard tragedy

It was a still dawn. Not even the rooster was crowing. Hens clucked softly. They had forgotten yesterday’s tragedy, or at least they didn’t wish to remember it.

Yesterday a weasel had entered the barn. The rooster came to the hens’ rescue. He died in the attempt.

Milly the head hen broke the stillness. “At least he died a hero, fighting to protect us.”

“If he was still alive he’d definitely have something to crow about,” said Dilly.

Tilly was too upset to speak. When she tried to say something all that came out of her beak was a squawk. It was a squawk of grief.

Lilly summed up the situation. “At least we have each other. We shall look after one another.”

Unnoticed a weasel entered the barn.
