Meredith was all of fifteen years old when she spied in her local library a book titled “Traditional Spells”. She didn’t for one minute believe in spells but she thought the book would be fun to read. She took the book home. The first spell was in some foreign language so Meredith skipped over it. The second spell was in English, thank goodness. It was a chant that would supposedly cause it to rain. Meredith went outside and read it out loud. It started to rain! Meredith wondered if it wasn’t a fluke. She moved on to the next spell. The next spell was quite different. In fact, it was sheer nastiness. If someone disagrees with you, chant this spell and they will go mute. No good trying that at home; she would take the book to school in the morning. Her first class was chemistry, and Meredith bragged before the whole class that she could shut Gerald Hickey up. Gerald Hickey was a know-all in that class and thought (and said) that Meredith was an idiot. Meredith quietly chanted the spell. When she had finished everything went deathly quiet. The teacher stopped taking. Leonie and Roberta in the back row who constantly talked went silent. The whole room fell mute. Panic set in, but without talk. Students dashed from the classroom. The teacher left clutching his throat. Meredith had forgotten to use Gerald Hickey’s name so the spell fell on everyone. Meredith was left alone in the classroom. She felt awful about the spell. The footnote said there was another spell on page 74 that would counteract the spell she had used. But how could she gather the class together again? The next class was the next day. And there they were! Not a student was missing. The class sat and the teacher stood in silence. Suddenly out of the silence a chant arose: “Gotcha Meredith! Gotcha Meredith!” The chant was led by Gerald Hickey. Meredith didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. It was the last time she used a spell. Back to Index Next Story Previous Story |
