Two garden worms lived a most satisfying life in a rose bed. Worms of course are hermaphrodites so pronouns are of no concern in this story. One worm’s name was Gladioli and the name of the other was Tomatillo. One sunny summer’s morning a vicious blackbird hopped around the rose garden and picked up Tomatillo in its beak. “Help! Help!” shouted Tomatillo. Gladioli came to the rescue. It shouted at the blackbird, “Put it down! Put it down! That worm belongs to me.” “No I don’t belong to you,” shouted Tomatillo. “I belong to the blackbird here. Tell Gladioli, Mr. Blackbird, that I belong to you.” “Tomatillo is mine,” said the blackbird. As you know, blackbirds have to open their beaks if they want to talk. Tomatillo fell from the blackbird’s beak, and Gladioli and Tomatillo wriggled away to safety as fast as their little legs would carry them. Back to Index Next Story Previous Story |
