Why not? Everyone has a pet canary.
They make such a mess. They throw their birdseed out of the cage and onto the floor. You’d have to keep it in a room that has linoleum.
But our kitchen has a lino floor. We can keep it in there.
With all the bird seed flung about it would be like walking on gravel. So, no dear, you can’t have a pet canary.
WHAAAA! BUT I WANT A PET CANARAY!
You can’t have any more pets. Having three pet hippopotamuses is enough.
