3308. The door to nowhere

When Noelene and John Crampton moved into their new house it was “the first day of the rest of their lives”. They had long wished for their own home, and with a substantial inheritance from Noelene’s late bachelor uncle their wish was fulfilled.

It wasn’t a fancy house, in fact it was quite old, but they looked forward to doing it up a bit themselves. There were three bedrooms, an adequate enough kitchen, a dining room, a separate sitting room, and a tolerable bathroom. All was set on half an acre of mainly unkempt lawn.

But there was one thing in the house that puzzled them; there was a locked door. Looking at the setup of the house there seemed little or no space for the door to lead anywhere. There didn’t seem to be a room on the other side of the door. No key had been provided, and they were loath to knock the door down by force. They tried a locksmith who said the complexity and age of the lock meant the only solution was to smash the door down.

They left the door as it was, and it became known as “The door to nowhere”. Quickly, in Noelene and John’s imaginations, they concocted stories of murder victims and ogres and blood curdling trolls lurking behind the door!

It was while clearing the overgrown lawn sometime later that John came across a rusty key. Aha! It was with a little trepid excitement that Noelene and John faced the door. The key fitted but wouldn’t turn. They loosened the workings through the keyhole. The door opened! There was nothing there but housing insulation which padded the outside wall. Obviously some previous owners had intended to extend the house at some stage, suggested John to Noelene.

That night they quickly changed their mind.
