Don’t get me wrong. There are many advantages in being rich. Only the other day I went to visit my elderly mother. She lives only an hour’s flight away. I travel in the company jet with a motorbike stored permanently in the luggage compartment. Then when I reach the destination I simply jump on the bike and take off. I estimate I can save about four hours each way just by having my own flying machine. The disadvantage lies in the sheer drudgery of life. If I need a new fridge I go out and buy it. There’s no thrill in doing that. My cousin, Roderick, and his wife, needed a new fridge. They skimped and saved for weeks, and when they got the fridge (all paid for) Roderick called in sick at work. He stayed home and he and his wife purred all day over the fridge. It’s the simple things of life I miss. Only the other day I tried to balance things out a little. It was my wife’s birthday so I didn’t get the most expensive bouquet at the florists. No, I went for a bunch of colourful daisies. I thought they were wonderful. All my wife said when she got them delivered was “Is that all?” Sometimes we rich people just can’t win. My two boys – we like to give them memorable experiences in life; things they will recall and treasure for the rest of their lives. We booked this two-week vacation to Rarotonga. All we got was “Oh not again. It’s boring over there. There’s nothing to do but swim all day.” I’ve a good mind to send them to boarding school. You know just two days ago I was driving home from work and I got a puncture – front right. I could have called the Automobile Association of which I am a paying member, and asked them to come and change the tire. I didn’t. I said to myself that I was going to be like an ordinary person and change the tire myself. After three quarters of an hour I still couldn’t find the car jack. Not that I’d know how to use it. So I called the Automobile Association and they came and change the tire in three minutes. Yes, I can’t complain too much. There are certainly advantages in being rich.
