2972. Many names, many guises

I’ve been an undercover agent for so long it’s hard to remember all the guises and names I’ve gone under.

I think my favourite was early on in my career when I went as Donal and spent the summer lolling on the beach in my swim gear. We got the serial killer in the end.

Then there was the time I went as Mervin, wearing what some of you think every undercover agent wears; a large hat pulled down at the front, sunglasses, and a trench coat. That stint wasn’t particularly successful and ended in no arrests.

After that I was Stanislaus doing the night clubs. Unfortunately I fell in love with Theodora and my investigations went from bad to worse. I thought the bosses would fire me for incompetence, but they simply transferred me to another job in another city as Harold.

Working as Lovelock in a coffee shop was a highlight. Mainly because I got free coffees and lots of different coffee beans to take home. Of course I didn’t have a coffee machine but I borrowed one from the shop which I still have.

As I say, I’ve gone under many names in many guises. Now, after forty years in the business I’m retiring. As the boss said at my farewell retirement function: We wish you all the best for your retirement, Clarence.

Clarence? Who the hell is Clarence?
