Helga had always wanted to keep chickens. Just three, maybe four. It wasn’t so much the thought of getting eggs, it was more an interest; a skill she could learn. She purchased a book called “Raising Chickens” and she devoured it avidly.

Of course initially she had no shed to keep the hens in, so after much planning she built a chicken run herself. It was one of those that could be wheeled about to fresh areas of grass. She had about an acre of grass at the back of her house. It was more of a wilderness than a lawn.

Helga used to enjoy watching them. Then one day, after she had had them for some time, she opened the coop door and let them out. They happily fossicked among the undergrowth. After about an hour she locked them up again.

As time went on Helga grew more confident. She would let them out in the morning and lock them up in the evening. They knew where the nesting boxes were and would come inside the coop to lay their eggs.

What Helga needed was a rooster. What Helga got was thirty-seven baby chickens, and she didn’t eat pets.
