2966. Waiting

Don’t you just hate it when you have to hang around and wait? Arthur’s friends (more acquaintances), Matilda and John Grassmore, had said they would pop in to see Arthur sometime in the afternoon. They were just passing through the area but were keen to “catch up”.

Arthur had started at one o’clock looking out the window every few minutes. It was now four o’clock and they still hadn’t turned up. He could have mowed the lawn. He could have baked a cake. He could have taken his laundry to the laundromat. But no! He had to hang around for two inconsiderate acquaintances to arrive and presumably have a cup of coffee.

Arthur had had the radio going and the local talkback show hosts were giving a new car to whatever caller could answer their question about what a 2D quantum superfluid feels like to touch. Arthur knew the answer. He phoned and got “We’re sorry but the car has just been won.”

That brassed off Arthur even more than the visitors not turning up. And then, around five o’clock they did turn up. In the brand new car they had just won.
