2965. On the pink phone

Lavinia pressed a button then whispered something into her pink phone. She retreated to the corner of the room. The group of girls who had been with her could tell she was having an animated conversation with whoever it was. Now she was yapping away; now she was listening. Perhaps it was her mother, or a sister, or a friend. It didn’t seem to be a boyfriend; the body language wasn’t quite right, but then again, maybe it was.

Angelina nonchalantly moved closer to where Lavinia was on the phone. She heard Lavinia say “That’s for doing after school.” There was still no hint as to who she was talking to.

Then Lavinia pressed a button, put her phone in her pocket, and re-joined the group. They were dying to ask her “Who was that?” But Lavinia chatted about English Class as if nothing had happened. Bernice summed up what everyone was thinking a little later once Lavinia had gone: “Some people are just plain selfish.”
