It was most unusual. Godfrey turned up at Patricia’s house with a parcel. It was about the size of a shoe box, and wrapped in pretty paper.

“I thought we’d better bury the hatchet,” said Godfrey. “These animosities can go on forever.”

Godfrey and Patricia had been boyfriend/girlfriend for over four years. More and more arguments dominated the relationship. In the end Patricia said she’d had enough. All was over.

“I’m not trying to get back to a relationship,” said Godfrey. “I just want to be able to exchange courteous pleasantries when our paths cross. Open the parcel at your leisure when I’m gone. It’s something you’ve always wanted.”

Patricia thanked him and Godfrey left. Patricia opened the parcel. It was a box of cow manure. Godfrey worked on a dairy farm. Patricia had harped for about two years about wanting a little cow manure for her garden. She got some at last, but to be honest, she wasn’t exactly sure how to interpret it.
