2927. A happy death

Monique: Oh Susan, I’m so sorry to hear of Bradley’s passing. What a tremendous gap has come into your life. I hope you’re coping okay. If there’s anything I can do…

Susan: Thank you Monique. The best thing is that he died happy and fairly quickly. These things can string out interminably.

Monique: Did he leave you any final instructions, Susan? It’s so much easier when the deceased say what they want. Service format. Burial or cremation. Songs. So much to decide. I hope he left you at least some of his wishes.

Susan: No unfortunately he left very few instructions, although after forty-one years of marriage I probably have a fairly good idea as to what his wishes would be. His final words were: “Pie Jesu”.

Monique: Pie Jesu?

Susan: Yes. He died with Pie Jesu on his lips.

Monique: Oh Susan! What a consolation! What a comfort! To think that Bradley died with the name of his Lord and Saviour on his lips. How precious it is to be saved. To have known and loved Jesus throughout life, and to die with the name of Sweet Jesus on your lips.

Susan: Dear me, no, Monique. He wasn’t calling upon Jesus in his last moments. “Pie Jesu” is the name of his race horse.
