Patrick was a thief. There was a certain orderliness to his larceny. Well, it appeared that way. Most of the detectives on the case felt there was some sort of pattern to the places that were visited. They felt they should be able to deduce where the thief was next to strike. It was only a funny feeling they had, but they were unable to quite put their finger on it.

One detective had it all worked out – Officer Giffin – but he wasn’t going to tell a soul. He was a serial killer, the one the whole country feared. He knew exactly where and when Patrick the thief would strike next. Immediately after Patrick had left a building Officer Giffin would murder the victim. The thief and murderer were wrongly regarded by the police as the one entity.

One night Patrick’s van got a puncture as he headed to the exclusive suburb he referred to as “my diamond mine”. By the time he arrived at his intended house he drove straight passed. The place was swarming with police. There had been a murder. They awaited the arrival of Officer Giffin who headed such cases.

Patrick knew none of this. He was curious. He drove back and was stopped. Had he seen anything? What was he doing in this part of town at this time of night? The man questioning Patrick recognized him, but the recognition wasn’t mutual. Patrick didn’t recognize Officer Giffin. Patrick was arrested on a string of serial murder charges.
