3156. Steve's bucket list

Steve had always wanted to run a marathon. He didn’t necessarily want to win but to simply be able to say that he’d done it. It was on his bucket list.

Steve had never had much luck with his bucket list. Years ago – it seemed like years – his mother had suggested he make a bucket list. “It doesn’t hurt to have set aims in life,” she had said.

His first hope was to go to Disney World but his father took very ill the day before Steve’s flight and he had to cancel. Then there was his desire to go white water rafting. He made a booking but on the scheduled day the river was in flood. He had to cancel.

This year he was definitely going to run a marathon. He trained for months. In fact he ran the distance of a marathon twice a week. He was going to achieve his aim, until on the day he came down with stomach flu and that was that. As his mother so insensitively said, “It was like a kick in the guts.”

Next year Steve hopes to do a parachute jump. He’s already booked in. What he likes about it is that if the weather is unsuitable they don’t cancel but postpone. So inclement weather or not he’s going to get the parachute jumping opportunity. It’s going to be the first thing he can check off on his bucket list. That’s if the parachute opens.
