Everyone was very surprised when Duncan volunteered to visit some old people weekly as part of his youth group’s outreach. Duncan had been rather wayward during his high school years, and now that he’d left school he still lived with his parents and had part time jobs here and there.

Duncan volunteered to visit old Mr. Carpenter on the corner house. Mr. Carpenter didn’t just need a listening ear for half an hour a week, but he wouldn’t mind a younger person to help mow the lawn. The place was fairly run down.

Every week Duncan would call in, mow the lawn, and sit down for a chat. Other members of the youth club couldn’t believe it. They didn’t like Duncan much; he was generally sour and sometimes even nasty. But here he was being nice to Mr. Carpenter.

As time went on Mr. Carpenter told Duncan that he had no family and so when he left this world he was leaving everything to Duncan. That was almost a year ago. Duncan is impatient. He’s started making plans.
