Joan and Neil had been married for seventeen years. Joan always took her engagement ring off when she did the dishes. She would put it on the kitchen window sill lest it get into the sink and go down the plug hole. On this particular day she finished the dishes and went to put her ring back on and it wasn’t there. She searched everywhere. Neil took the kitchen sink pipes apart. All to no avail. They searched everywhere. Neil even did the vacuuming (a new experience) and went through the dust bag. What will be will be. They hoped it would turn up somewhere quite by itself, as things sometimes do. Several weeks later a man arrived to replace the worn house carpet. This had been saved for and planned for quite some time. The man took a few days to finish laying the carpet. After he’d finished he took the ring he’d found to the pawn dealers and got a handsome sum. Mind you, it wasn’t for just the ring. There were a few other bits and pieces as well that he'd picked up.
