3095. Used clothes

Janine didn’t have much money, which is why she shopped in the second-hand clothes store when she needed something decent to wear. She was going to her sister’s wedding and wanted something inexpensive yet nice.

She spent ages in the clothes shop. This one was too floral. This one was too plain. This one fitted perfectly yet was shocking pink; could she perhaps dye it? She would have to dye it black. This one had a little tear in the zipper. And this one was perfect! Just perfect! It was modest and simple, yet charming. The cost however was a little over what she had budgeted for. Still, thirteen dollars for a garment for a wedding was a bonus indeed.

My word! Did Janine look lovely wearing it or what? She almost outshone the bride. And she felt so good, so self-assured, so… lovely.

That was when Dolly, a gossip whom no one really liked, said: “You bought that frock at the used clothes shop. I know because it used to be a colleague’s of mine. An everyday dress for a secretary. It makes the wearer look like a frump.”
