With two ravenous teenage sons Clara had to manage the household budget with a great deal of care. “You get plenty to eat,” she would say. “And just remember you eat well because you help me every Sunday in the vegetable garden.”

It was true. Clara had a vegetable garden to be envied. “I realize of course that a great number of people don’t have the time or space to grow their own vegies, and that’s why I leave what we have to spare at the gate.” And indeed she did! A sign went up every early Saturday morning “Free to a good home!” and there were carrots and shallots and lemons and sunflower seeds and cabbages and Brussels sprouts and you name it, they all made an appearance one week or another.

The wonder was that always everything would be gone within the hour. “There are definitely people in the area who are struggling,” said Clara, “and it is a privilege to be able to help.”

One of Clara’s sons was having a birthday, and when asked what he want for a cake, he said he wanted an apple pie – which isn’t a cake but who cares? One thing that Clara didn’t have was apples so she went to the Saturday market. “Goodness me!” she said. “Look at the exorbitant price of those vegetables. Ridiculous!”

That is when she realized that the vegetables she was looking at were hers.
