3165. Two old cronies
© Bruce Goodman 4 April 2025

My wife and I were amateur artists. We had a little yacht – most modest – and we took our canvases and paints out to sea and along various coastlines. Every now and then we would pull into some desolate bay and remain for a few day while we made sketches of the landscape. Twice we had been stopped by the foreign Coast Guard and asked what we were doing. Well, we were just two retired old people sailing around the majestic coastline with our paints and brushes.

Both times the Coast Guards had scoffed at our artistic endeavours. “You won’t get much for those,” they said, “but we suppose two old retired cronies can’t get up to much harm. This is a restricted area.”

Two old cronies indeed! When we got home the Defence Department was more than pleased with our maps of the enemy coastline.
