The problem was: Vivienne and Rodney didn’t have a butter conditioner in their refrigerator. Rodney still preferred to keep the butter on a shelf in the fridge, and Vivienne preferred to keep the butter in the pantry where it would be a bit softer for spreading. The refrigerated butter was hard as a block of ice. Vivienne had to hack off huge chunks for her toast in the mornings. It was extremely fattening and unhealthy. There was no possible compromise; either the butter was too hard or the butter was too soft. Both had been reared in opposite camps (years ago) by their parents. In the end Rodney won. When Rodney went off to a work long weekend at some retreat centre, the first thing Vivienne did after she had waved goodbye was to take the butter out of the fridge. She was going to have a succulent, buttery weekend. In fact, she had already been to the baker’s and bought a loaf of fresh bread crying out for butter. When Rodney came back from his work retreat he had a surprise for Vivienne. “Surprise! Surprise!” he said. Ï have an anniversary surprise for you. I’ve bought a new fridge. It has a butter conditioner.” Oh,” said Vivienne. “But I like our old fridge. There is nothing wrong with it. It’s perfectly good.” Back to Index Next Story Previous Story |
