2914. Your privacy is protected

Amelia-Winifred felt secure. She had been assured when she bought her computer that her privacy was protected. (We store your information only so we might better our service and tailor it to your needs). When she hooked up to the internet the man assured her that her privacy was protected. When she bought some programs to install she was assured that her privacy was protected – as long as the information was stored on you private space up in the clouds in China or somewhere.

How wonderful at last to be connected to the world! She had been a little frightened to venture into the world of computers. It’s just that it was different. She had been brought up on pen and paper and had graduated to a typewriter in her twenties. Now being a septuagenarian it was time to take another plunge.

What an exhausting process but now all had been setup. The first thing Amelia-Winifred did was to log onto her supermarket, fill out the form, and order a few things. Her order was confirmed with her first email! Within minutes a second email arrived:

Hello Amelia-Winifred. We have selected these items especially for you:

HAROLDS TINNED SALMON
SWIRLY SOAP POWDER
HOMECOOKED BLACK CURRENT BUNS
AVON STICKY NAME TAGS

But these are the things I just bought twenty minutes ago, thought Amelia-Winifred, although different brand names. And from a different supermarket.

Protected privacy indeed! Amelia-Winifred felt exposed. In future was her every move to be recorded and stored?
