2902. The white owl

Heath was quietly gazing out his dining room window when he noticed a beautiful, pure white owl fly from a group of bushes onto a fence post. It was daytime. He thought owls were night-time birds. Heath grabbed the binoculars for a closer look.

What a beautiful creature! And then he noticed something in the bushes from where the owl had flown. It was disgusting. Heath was horrified. He didn’t even like looking at it but he couldn’t help it.

He called his wife. Come and see this. In the bushes behind the white owl over there. He handed his wife the binoculars. That is disgusting, said Miriam. Horrific. Utterly appalling. It seems to almost have a human face, but frightfully distorted. I don’t even like looking at it. She handed the binoculars back just as the phone rang.

It was Rebecca. Miriam explained what she had seen. It’s mind-boggling, she said. It’s utterly horrendous. Yes, yes. Come around for a look. It’ll blow your mind.

My goodness, said Heath still looking through the binoculars. It’s still there. Unbelievable! By now the while owl had flown away. Let’s hope that thing also goes away.

Before Rebecca arrived it had disappeared. Thank goodness for that, said Miriam. Thank God for small mercies, said Heath. Let’s hope we don’t have that lurking around here again.

Without warning two white owls landed on the fence. They looked Heath’s way. Rebecca arrived. The owls moved up the fence.
