2764. Creature of habit

Susan was a creature of habit. Aren’t we all? Except Susan was more of a creature of habit than most. She lived alone and would rise at five each morning; in summer in the light, in winter in the dark.

Of course her early morning was so structured that she didn’t need to turn the light on. She would grope her way into the kitchen and turn on the coffee machine which had been prepared the previous evening. It was while making her way to the coffee machine in the dark that she bumped into someone.

Susan screamed and reached for the light switch. The lights came on. There was no one there. She returned to the bedroom, locked the door, and pushed the dressing table hard up against the door. She got back into bed.

It was the first time in many, many years that Susan was still in bed at eight in the morning. In fact her corpse was still in bed several days later, and the bedroom door was wide open.
