Spenser was a hitman and faced with a terrible conundrum. He had accepted two jobs; one was from a man to kill his wife, and the other was from a woman to kill her husband. Spencer subsequently learned that they were a married couple. If he killed both he wouldn’t get paid, and if he killed only the one he’d get only half the money. Likewise, if he let both go free he’d get no money for that either.
Usually he demanded pre-payment – or at least a percentage. In both these cases he had foolishly stated that they could pay him after the deed was done.
He called a meeting of both parties involved and revealed to each what the plans had been. He said to one: “She wants you dead” and to the other “He wants you dead”.
Spencer was clearly oblivious to the fact that the husband and wife wanted one another dead because they had used the wrong pronouns. They were both horrified by Spenser's utter lack of caring. The husband pulled out a flick knife and stabbed Spencer. The wife took off a stiletto-heeled shoe and stabbed Spenser. He died. "I think we can work out our differences," said the husband to the wife.
