Violet White despised her married name of “White”. To be more specific, “White” would have been fine, but her parents when she was born had named her Violet. She was a walking contradiction; a paradox. Her teacher once called her an oxymoron. Anyone would know that “Violet White” is not an oxymoron. What a moron! Violet’s maiden name was Brolinkavski, which was much better than White except no one could spell it.

Violet had few blood relatives but her husband came from a large family, so in effect Violet had lots and lots of in-law relatives. If the truth be known she didn’t like many of them, but she made an effort. In fact in the room which she called her “Quilting Space” she had a huge cork notice board with photos of these relatives pinned up. Undoubtedly she was thinking about each one, one by one, and recalling something good she could say about each.

Some of these relatives were quite old. In fact a number of them had passed on. “It’s such a shame,” said Violet, “that these people have passed away just as I was getting to know them.”

When I visited her I asked why she needed so many pins to hold each photo up when one would suffice. She said that when she opened a window, gusts of wind would blow the photos all over the place. So she had each relative pinned with at least half a dozen pins. I was quite impressed by the effort she was making.
