Elizabeth Logan

1778 - 1855

Elizabeth Logan was born in 1781 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Her parents and siblings are unknown.

Around 1802 a Cambridge don had an enjoyable vacation in Scotland! His identity is unknown, but it was possibly James Plumptre. Elizabeth was expecting a baby, and the Cambridge don had return to his university.

Elizabeth came to Cambridge from Scotland to seek out the don. Family tradition has it that she walked from her home to Cambridge. In 1803 she gave birth to a son, whom she called Samuel Logan. Whether there was a responsible pay-off or hush-money paid out is unknown. Later, her son Samuel had enough money to set up his own rowing boat manufacturing business, and all of his sons (Elizabeth's grandchildren) became Cambridge graduates. It seems that Samuel's biological father had nothing to do with them other than payments.

At Chesterton, Cambridge, on the 4th of February 1805, Elizabeth Logan married William Jolly. Elizabeth was 26 and William 22. William was a thatcher by trade. A short time later their first son, John Jolly, was born.

John was followed by Thomas in January 1807. He died in March of the following year. Another Thomas was born in January 1809. He was followed by William in 1811, Elizabeth in 1814, Mary Ann in 1816, Sarah in 1818, and Benjamin in 1819.

In 1824, Elizabeth's 21 year old son, Samuel Logan, married a 34 year old widow called Harriott Etty. Harriett had four children from her previous marriage. She and Samuel had no children. Harriott died on the 7th of January 1850, and on the 2nd of April 1850 Samuel married Elizabeth Charles. Over the next twelve years, Samuel and Elizabeth had six children.

On the 21st of October 1834, Elizabeth's son, Thomas Jolly, married Mary Ann Snelling. They were to have nine children. Thomas was a bricklayer, and he went to New Zealand with his family.

On Christmas Day, 1836, daughter Sarah married Joseph Wright in Shoreditch, London.

On the 29th of November 1841, Elizabeth's son, John Jolly, married Susan Hempleton.

On the 18th of October 1845, daughter Mary Ann married William Coxall. They were to have five children. On the 8th of October 1846, daughter Elizabeth married James Farren. There were to have eight children.

On the 30th of September 1851, son Benjamin married Frances Caroline Charles. They were to have nine children. Benjamin became the Mayor of Chesterton.

The 1851 census has Elizabeth working as a laundress.

Elizabeth died on the 2nd of November 1855 aged 76. She was buried in the Chesterton Church graveyard on the 7th of November. Her husband was buried in the same plot in 1868.
