The Kerrs were farmers from Kilikougan, Portglenone in County Antrim, Ireland. Mary Jane Kerr came to New Zealand in 1872 and settled in Wakarara, Hawkes Bay, after spending some time in Thames and Takapau.

The Lightollers owned cotton mills in Chorley, Lancashire, England. Frederick James Lightoller came to New Zealand in 1885, and he lived in Dargaville, Opotiki, Waipawa and Petone.
