What is the Dance About?


This piece of Dance Theatre does what some purists are inclined to dislike: it mixes Ballet, Contemporary Dance, Ballroom Dancing, and Folk Dancing – perhaps with elements of Pantomime. The set is folksy. Although it could possibly be performed by children, adult performers were envisaged.

The script can be read below and has links to audio and sheet music files. At present the score is simply for the piano.

Scene One - Village Market

MUSIC 1: Opening Fanfare

Curtains open to a traditional village scene with a row of shops, e.g. fruit and vegetables, drapery, bakery, household goods. Townsfolk dance in front. They move to one side. A second group of Townsfolk emerge from the shops. There is opportunity if desired for individual dancers to perform at the door of each shop. Both groups merge. Little Red Riding Hood enters and briefly joins them. She disappears into the Bakery. The Townsfolk exit (siesta time!)

MUSIC 3: Forest Rangers off to work

A group of Forest Rangers enters. These Rangers always dance in military formation with three legs (being tied as in a three-legged race – for no apparent reason). They exit towards forest.

MUSIC 4: Little Red Riding Hood

Little Red Riding Hood appears from the Bakery with her basket of goodies. She dances and exits towards the forest.

MUSIC 5: Big Bad Wolf

A giant wolf’s shadow falls across the stage. The Wolf makes a solo appearance. He is both to be feared and arrogant – and yet likeable. He dances and exits towards the forest.

Townsfolk populate the area again (post-siesta!). Gradually the scene empties.
These reprises (if desired) serve as an opportunity to change scene.

Scene Two – In the Forest

MUSIC 7: Forest Flora

The village scene transforms into a forest scene: trees, vines, flowers. A Forest Flora entanglement.

MUSIC 8: Forest Fauna

Forest Fauna gather and dance. It includes the Three Little Pigs. Fauna joins the Flora.

Little Red Riding Hood enters, puts down her basket, gets distracted and picks flowers to take to Grandma. She is joined in her dance by some of the Flora and Fauna.

MUSIC 10: Riding Hood and Wolf meet.

Pas de deux. The Wolf enters looking debonair. He offers Little Red Riding Hood a beautiful flower. She is enchanted. They dance. The Wolf dances solo, in which he shows off a little too much. Little Red Riding Hood dances solo. They dance together. Towards the end, as Little Red Riding Hood has her face turned away, the Wolf scampers off in the direction of Grandma’s cottage. Little Red Riding Hood is bewildered by his disappearance. She exits towards Grandma’s cottage.

MUSIC 11: Reprise: Flora and Fauna

Flora and Fauna celebrate. The scene empties. Scene change. Some of the Flora and Fauna might stay for the new scene.

Scene Three – Grandma’s House

MUSIC 12: Axe Dance

The forest scene has moved and we see the outside of Grandma’s cottage, plus a section of the cottage “sliced open”. The Forest Rangers dance, still three-legged.

MUSIC 13: Granny Wolf

Lights rise on the inside of Grandma’s cottage. The Wolf is in bed dressed as Grandma. Little Red Riding Hood enters. The Wolf rises from the bed. The Wolf does a little dance of greeting. The Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood dance and mime What-big-eyes-you-have, What-big-ears-you-have, What-a-big-nose-you-have, What-big-teeth-you-have.

The Wolf chases Little Red Riding Hood and catches her.

MUSIC 14: Rangers Capture Wolf

The Forest Rangers come to the rescue. They entrap the Wolf inside their military manoeuvres. Little Red Riding Hood is saved. Some Forest Ranges hold the Wolf. Little Red Riding Hood searches around for Grandma. The Forest Ranges can still be three-legged or not – depending on whether it has become tiresome for the audience.

MUSIC 15: Transformation Scene – The Kiss

Several Forest Rangers bring in Grandma. She is not much the worse for wear. She greets Little Red Riding Hood and dances a supplication to Little Red Riding Hood to forgive the Big Bad Wolf. The Wolf joins Grandma in her supplication. It culminates in Little Red Riding Hood tentatively shaking the Wolf’s hand and then… giving him a kiss.

The Wolf transforms into a Handsome Prince (oh yeah, what’s wrong with that?) Little Red Riding Hood and the Handsome Prince exit hand in hand.

MUSIC 16: Reprise: Rangers’ military manoeuvres.

Scene Four – Village Market

The village scene reappears. Villagers and Grandma dance. Flora and Fauna and Forest Rangers appear and perhaps join in.

Little Red Riding Hood and the Handsome Prince enter in a Wedding Procession with Guard of Honour.

MUSIC 19: Finale

All rejoice and live happily ever after. Little Red Riding Hood briefly dances. The Handsome Prince dances. The Three Little Pigs enter and trot across the stage. The Handsome Prince spies them and follows them hungrily off stage. He re-enters as the Big Bad Wolf.
