It was a rainy day. Elaine was stuck inside with little to do. To put that another way, she was bored. She even browsed through a series of classic novels her mother had bought for her during high school: Nicholas Nickleby, Jane Eyre, War of the Worlds, Animal Farm… Suddenly an envelope fell out of Gulliver’s Travels onto the floor. Inside was a letter. It was a “Love letter” written during high school days. Elaine had penned the letter to Dale Bickerton in her class but she never had the courage to post it. On reading it now Elaine’s face reddened with embarrassment. How could she in her younger years have written such tripe? Thank goodness she never posted it. In fact, she had no idea why she would have kept it. The rain continued outside. Elaine wondered what had become of Dale Bickerton. It was six years since they had left high school. He probably had a family or an important job by now. What better way to fill in a rainy day than to trace an old school crush. It didn’t take long. There online was his phone number! Elaine half dialled the number and pressed the off button. She did that three times, and in the end gave up and made a cup of coffee. Blow it! She would try again. She did! A man answered. “Hi. It’s me Elaine Robertson from high school. It’s a rainy day here and I was recollecting a few memories and thought I’d give you a call just to see how things were going.” “Did you say Eileen Robson?” “No, Elaine Robertson.” “I’m sorry, I don’t remember you at all.” “Oh.” Back to Index Next Story Previous Story |
