3228. A romance in the piggery

Francie was so intent on looking at the charming new farmhand that she accidentally tripped on a piglet and plunged headlong into the new farmhand’s arms.

“Are you alright?” he asked.

“I’m fine,” said Francie. “I hope I didn’t hurt the little piglet.”

“It’s fine,” said the charming new farmhand. “My name’s Tommy.”

“I’m Francie.” She wondered if perhaps Tommy had held her for a trifle longer than necessary. She certainly hoped so.

“I work here,” said Francie. “I look after the hogs. There used to be a grumpy old man helping me but he left last week.”

“I guess I’m the replacement,” said Tommy. “I started on the farm today and they sent me to the pig sties. At first I was disappointed being sent to the swine but with you here it’s not disappointing at all. But I know nothing about looking after pigs.”

“I’ll teach you,” said Francie. “I’ve been here a while and know quite a lot.”

Thus began a romance in the piggery. Daily they worked together with the pigs and the year ended with a pretty healthy bank balance. It was then that Tommy thought he might propose.

It had been a whole season since Francie had first espied a charming farmhand applicant, and convinced her father to employ him to work in the piggery.
