3121. Baby-sitting

Chantelle was a responsible sixteen year old, and was available for baby-sitting duties. It was exciting when her uncle and aunt, Freddie and Freda, asked her to babysit their two-year old daughter. Of course there wasn’t much to do; Angelina would already be fast asleep. All that Chantelle need do was watch TV or make a coffee or even do her homework.

Freddie and Freda had left. Chantelle had to read a novel of choice for school so now was as good a time as any to get started. She had settled down in an armchair and read about twenty pages when she heard noises – coming from the ceiling. It was like footsteps and a soft indecipherable conversation. The trouble was that this was a single-story house.

Chantelle froze. The sounds came and went. Then they returned. It was as if furniture was being moved around. Then she heard it, clear as a bell: “Enough is enough.” It was a woman’s voice. It didn’t sound particularly urgent. A man answered but Chantelle couldn’t make out what was said. She thought she had better check on little Angelina so she went to Angelina’s room. Angelina was fast asleep. Chantelle went back to her armchair and book.

Then she heard it again. She put aside her book. She couldn’t concentrate. She made a coffee and turned the TV on. There was nothing much to watch but it was a distraction. It drowned out strange noises. Eventually Freda and Freddie returned. Chantelle was relieved. She vowed never to read another Stephen King novel while baby-sitting alone.
