3284. A slice of life

It could’ve been done by any two of the three patients seated in the eye doctor’s waiting room. A patient would be called into the doctor who would put some eye numbing droplets in the eye, then send each back to the waiting room until the numbness took effect.

All three had gone in and come back. It was then they noticed the dead body behind the row of chairs. It was a woman. She was definitely dead. She wasn’t there when all three of them had been seated prior to each been called in. The woman must have come in and while one of the patients was absent the other two did the murder. There were always two in the waiting room. Each swore black and blue that they didn’t know one another prior to the appointment.

The police naturally were called and they arrived promptly and began questioning. The eye doctor himself declared that he didn’t know the woman and that there were no further appointments for the day. She had a car license and such in her handbag. Her name was Marilyn Downey. Further investigation revealed her to be a shop assistant at a nearby bookstore.

One of the three patients recalled that when there were two of them there the other one had gone to the bathroom. So there was only the one in the room for that period of time. But that was little help as the one doing the talking was the one who would’ve been alone, and one would hardly incriminate oneself.

Marilyn’s body was carted away by a mortician. Contrary to what the three patients expected the eye doctor continued with his appointments and saw each in turn. It seemed a little callous somehow. Each went their own way. That was the last any ever heard of Marilyn Downey.
