The Chillingworth Family had been hiding the war enemy for eight weeks. Vernon’s plane had been shot near the Chillingworth farm. He had parachuted down and landed in their garden. After initial fear and suspicion Farmer Chillingworth and Vernon chatted away. They instantly liked each other.

The old farm house had a secret room and Vernon was invited to stay. There were four Chillingworth children, so with Mr. and Mrs. Chillingworth, the four children and Vernon, there were seven in the house altogether.

Naturally the ground forces were searching the whole area for the missing pilot. In eight weeks they had had no success and had given up. They had been to Chillingworth’s farmhouse three times. Now, with little to worry about, Vernon had become like one of the family. They waited for the war to end.

It was during dinner that there was a sudden knock at the door. Vernon rushed to his secret chamber. Three soldiers entered.

“We’ve heard rumours that you are hiding an enemy pilot, a war criminal. We will search the house.”

“We have no such person,” said Farmer Chillingworth.

“Then why,” asked a soldier, “are there six of you yet seven places set at table?”
