The college accommodation was relatively cheap. The facilities were liveable but a little run down. Each room catered for two. If you didn’t like that arrangement you could look somewhere else. It’s a free world. Fletcher’s mother wasn’t particularly well off, but a college education had been Fletcher’s dream. Ever since his father had died – in fact from a snake bite – Fletcher had been keen to take over helping out as much as possible in the running of the home. “You’re going to college,” said Fletcher’s mother, “so you’ll just have to put up with less than state-of-the-art accommodation.” “As long as my roommate doesn’t have a pet snake,” joked Fletcher.
