2848. Till death us do part

Now Gilbert, you’d think after forty-seven years of marriage we would have discussed some things, but we’ve always avoided it like the plague. I supposed we preferred to pretend that it wouldn’t happen.

But now that the inevitable encroaches with your illness, with Fate knocking at the door and quite soon the doctor says, it really is time to discuss a few final arrangements such as do you want to get buried or cremated. And if buried, where; and if cremated where do we scatter the ashes. I’m not having a dead husband’s ashes sitting on the mantelpiece. I couldn’t think of anything scarier! I know we’ve said to “Do what you like” but it’s going to be a lot easier if we decided a few things in advance.

Do you want a church funeral or just in the funeral parlour with a few people? Any hymns? How about “How Great Thou Art”? Who would you like as pall bearers? Do you want roses or chrysanthemums on the coffin? You like both. Perhaps we could do a mixture.

And who should give the eulogy? I was thinking Steve, but Nick might be the one. Perhaps they could do a joint eulogy, the two boys together.

You’re not saying much Gilbert. What do you think? Gilbert?

Gilbert?
