2886. Palm reading

Ethelinda grabbed Khadijeh’s right hand and held it palm up.

“Let me read your future as written in the lines of your hand,” said Ethelinda. “The reading of palms is an ancient skill I learnt from my grandmother. Since you wear a burqa I cannot be accused of making things up by reading your facial reactions. I am a palm reader.”

“You are going to have a long life. You will marry and have six children. Your husband will die in his forties. Two of your children will leave home and you will never see them again. You will lose a leg in a car accident. All in all, I’m sorry, but there’s not a great deal in your future to look forward to.”

“That’s alright,” said Khadijeh. “I’ll be ninety-four next June.”
