2866. Old school friend

As he approached the house Colin saw smoke rising from the chimney. He knew Alwyn would be home.

He knocked. No reply. He went to the back yard. Alwyn was not there. He knocked on the back door. No reply. Alwyn must have popped out for something, thought Colin, although his car was in the garage.

Colin and Alwyn had been friends for years; since high school in fact. They had been best man at each other’s wedding. Now they were both widowers. Grandchildren called frequently. Colin wouldn’t hesitate to go into Alwyn’s house uninvited, but they maintained a semblance of each having their own space.

Colin sat on the front door steps for about half an hour and then wandered home.

For the next three days Alwyn lay unable to move on the floor in front of the fire. It had long gone out. The room was freezing. And then he died.
