2911. Unimagined disaster

When Pauline Withers’ husband died she wasn’t as distraught as she thought she would be. It had all been rather quick. For years – that would be about fifteen years – they had been married. They had had the occasional “disagreement” but not much. Pauline had always imagined the worst, knowing that what one imagines never comes true. And so she imagined several horrendous scenarios for her husband’s death.

And indeed! His death was nothing like anything she had ever imagined. He was simply in the kitchen loading the dishwasher after dinner. It was his usual task. He said, “I didn’t think much of that meat pie. The meat was a bit tough. Did you get it from our regular butcher?”

And she stabbed him with the carving knife.
