Dylan hated the fact that his parents had named him after the poet, Thomas Dylan. Everyone presumed he had been named after the singer, Bob Dylan. In fact a couple of people, when in a jovial mood, referred to him as Bob. At least his English teacher at school had asked him if he was named after Bob Dylan or Dylan Thomas, and after that the silly galoot always called him Thomas. After he’d given a speech in English class on how important people’s names are to them, the teacher said “Thank you Thomas. That was very good.” The English teacher’s name was Mrs. Anita Drain, so Thomas purposely said, “Thank you Mrs. Pipe.” Goodness me! Did that get a reaction or what? “How dare you make fun of people’s names. And after you have just given a speech of how important names are. You are on detention, Mr. ... Mr. Thingamabob.” That was when Dylan saw red. Politeness prevents a true record of what he said, although it involved Mrs. Drain doing something to herself that some might regard as impossible. It resulted in expulsion from school. These days the highly successful businessman, Dylan, gets called Bob (short for Thingamabob) by all his old school friends. Mrs. Anita Drain is now principal of the school. When Dylan donated a new laboratory block with naming rights to the school he named it after his supposed grandmother, Anita Pipe. Boy, did that piss a certain lady off. Back to Index Next Story Previous Story |
