| ‘Off again about sunrise - had to cross Pretty Sally hill, a mountain with hundreds of very steep hills on it. At one time, if Mason had not chalked the wheels just at the moment he did, horse, cart and all would have been precipitated hundreds of feet down. We had to take off part of our load and carry it up a long distance. The mountain was 6 miles over. It rained half the day; we got wet - our clothes had to dry on us. Encamped for the night: I was almost dead for loss of sleep.’ |
