Sheffield, from sheaf field, was originally a market and parish-town, in the upper-division of Strafforth and Tickhill, liberty of Hallamshire. It is situated upon a hill at the confluence of the rivers Sheaf and Don.

The town of Sheffield was known as "the company of Cutlers of Hallamshire" because of its fame at making cutlery and scissors.
