Tibshelf is a village of considerable extent, lying 4 miles north-east of Alfreton, 8 miles south-east of Chesterfield and close to the Nottinghamshire border. The area was rich in coal seams and the main employment was in the collieries. Other inhabitants were employed in the frame-work knitting of cotton hose. It is now the site of a motorway service area.
