In 1868 Beighton was described as a parish in the hundred of Scarsdale, in the county of Derby, 7 miles to the S.E. of Sheffield, its post town, and 10 N.E. of Chesterfield. The approach to the village from Eckington is through a massive stone cutting. The village itself is delightfully situated on a gentle declivity near the border of Yorkshire, on the banks of the river Rother.
