Deliah (Dilly) Frost

1779 - 1859


Deliah Frost was known as Dilly, and was possibly named after her father's sister Dorothy. She was born in Wirksworth, Derbyshire, England, on the 20th of January 1779, and baptised in the local church on the 9th of April. Her parents were John and Mary Frost nee Doxey.

Dilly had two older sisters: Jane born in 1775, and Mary born in 1776. She had one younger sister and two younger brothers: Martha born in 1781, George born in 1783, and James born in 1794.

On the 15th of February 1796, Dilly's sister Jane married Samuel Budworth. They were to have seven children: Mary, Joseph, Martha, John, Samuel, George and Dorothy.

On the 10th of April 1802, Dilly's sister Mary married William College.

At Fakenham Magna, Suffolk, on the 27 November 1803, Dilly married Stephen Snelling. Dilly was 24 and Stephen 23. At first Dilly and Stephen lived at Norton in Suffolk. Their first daughter, Sarah, was born the on the 15th of April 1805. Sarah was baptised on the 23rd of April.

Sometime during the next 12 months, the family moved to Woolpit in Suffolk. Their son Francis was born there on the 24th of September 1806, and baptised on the 4th of October.

On the 3rd of May 1807, Dilly's sister Martha married John Godbehere. Martha and John had a daughter Hannah.

Dilly's son Francis was followed by daughter Mary Ann born on the 3rd of April 1809 (baptised on the 14th of October), and son Stephen born in 1814 (baptised on the 25th of September).

On the 12th of April 1819, Dilly's brother James married Mary Frost. They had three children: Mary Ann, Elizabeth and James.

Sometime between 1814 and 1827, Dilly's husband Stephen died. On the 26th of May 1827 at Woolpit, Dilly married Francis Cocksedge.

On the 19th of October 1832, Dilly son Francis married Mariah Pettit in Woolpit. On the 21st of October 1834, Dilly's daughter Mary Ann married Thomas Jolly in Chesterton, Cambridge.

Dilly lived to see 16 grandchildren. In 1857, her daughter Mary Ann and family left England for New Zealnd.

Dilly Frost died in Suffolk in 1859, aged 80.
