A local legend tells how the site of St Oswald's church, Winwick, was decided by a pig that carried and laid the foundation stones where the church was subsequently built. The pig, so the story has it, is commemorated on the west wall of the tower. The historical record shows that a church existed here at the time of the Domesday Book in 1086.
