The town's name means a settlement near the River Chor. It became a borough in 1250 but lost this status in the 14th century only to have it restored in 1881. The town was the birthplace of Miles Standish one of the Pilgrim Fathers who sailed from Plymouth to America on the Mayflower.

The town was also home to Sir Henry Tate, famous for his "Tate and Lyle" sugar and the world famous Tate Gallery that he founded in London.

St Lawrence's church is the oldest building in the town. A story tells of how in the 19th century, marriages had to be performed in the church before midday. If a couple arrived late for the wedding the clock was stopped to ensure that it did not pass 12.
