Borwick was known as 'Bereuuic' in the Domesday Book of 1086 meaning 'Barley Farm'. This quiet village sits beside the Lancaster Canal just off the busy M6 motorway.

Borwick Hall in the village dates back to the 14th century with much of today's structure being built in the 16th century by the Bindloss family who were cloth merchants in Kendal. The village church was built by the Sharp family whose descendents still reside at Borwick Hall.
